With #CakesforCare, Amsterdam Verbindt wants to show resilience in the Amsterdam hospitality industry

With no fewer than 10,000 pieces of home-baked cake, the Amsterdam hospitality industry has set up a charity campaign for hospital staff in and around the city in record time. This is done under the motto Cakes for Care, on the initiative of Stichting Amsterdam Verbindt. With this campaign, the 5-member organization wants to bring together catering companies and institutions to show their appreciation for the unprecedented performance of hospitals during the pandemic, especially now that the corona pressure in hospitals is strongly increasing again.

The 1000 carrot cakes, good for 10,000 pieces of carrot cake, are prepared by 23 companies and institutions including RAI Amsterdam, hotels, restaurants and vocational schools - in their professional kitchens. The Amsterdam Verbindt foundation, known for the cooking project for homeless people 'cooking in a different kitchen', has found organic farmers of Bio Romeo willing to donate 800 kilos of Flevoland carrots, so-called rainbow carrots, free of charge for this campaign.

Fast logistics operation
Once prepared, the 1000 carrot cakes will be distributed this week via a rapid logistics operation across Amsterdam, Haarlem and Rotterdam hospitals and puncture locations, namely BovenIJ hospital, Fransiscus Gasthuis & Vlietland, GGD Amsterdam (RAI), OLVG East & West, Reade Rehabilitation and Spaarne Gasthuis.

Resilient
“The campaign, which we set up and carry out in 3 weeks, is the best way to show how your chain cooperation of catering, agriculture and hospital can lead to special and very effective partnerships,” says Henny Heijmans, initiator of Cakes for Care. “The campaign shows very well how resilient the sector still is after a year of much uncertainty,” says René Bekker, head chef of Hotel Casa Amsterdam. The organization is further represented by Ozgur Eylen from Kanteen25, Imèn Kadry from Hotelschool The Hague and David Thomason from Hutten Catering.
