Strandzuid Celebrates 20-Year Anniversary: Two Decades as a Summer Hotspot at the RAI
What once began as a simple idea by the water has grown into a well-known name in Amsterdam: Strandzuid is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Two decades ago, RAI COO Maurits van der Sluis suggested to hospitality entrepreneur Michel Pais that they “do something” with the space behind the RAI, by the water. A place for both Amsterdammers and visitors to our events. And so Strandzuid was created.
Since its opening, Strandzuid has developed into a vibrant city beach that attracts thousands of visitors from April to September each year. In the winter months, the beach makes way for Zuidpool, the go-to venue for atmospheric parties and celebrations.
Strandzuid not only offers a unique place to relax, but also plays an important role in the RAI’s events. Thanks to its open connection to the canals and the cosy harbour, it is also a popular location for corporate events and business gatherings, either independently or as part of events happening inside the RAI.
In 2006, we even received international recognition for this unique concept: the prestigious ‘Excellence Award’ from the UK’s Association of Exhibition Organisers (AEO) for the most innovative contribution to the exhibition industry. A crowning achievement and a testament to the power of collaboration and vision. Maurits van der Sluis looks back with pride:
“Strandzuid remains one of the finest examples of how we at the RAI continually seek new ways to make our grounds more attractive and versatile. We wanted to create something that adds value for our visitors as well as for the city, and we succeeded.”
Congratulations, Strandzuid, here’s to the next 20 years of sunshine, water, and connection!
