65 years at europaplein
On 2 February 2026, RAI Amsterdam marks 65 years at Europaplein. Since 1961, organisers, exhibitors, visitors and partners from around the world have gathered here. What started with four halls and a signal mast has grown into an international meeting place for entire industries.
From first pile to grand opening
The first pile for the new building at Europaplein was driven into the ground on 6 November. The Mayor of Amsterdam, Gijsbert van Hall, and RAI Chairman Egon Eriksson, wearing plastic coats and construction helmets, gave the official start. Although the 1955 building ban delayed construction, the ceremony felt decisive. Local residents raised their flags, the Amsterdam Police Band played the national anthem and salute shots echoed across the square.
In 1961, Prince Bernhard officially opened the new RAI Convention Centre. The complex featured four halls and required an investment of sixteen million guilders. Its centrepiece, the Europahal, measured 195 metres in length and offered 13,200 m² of column-free exhibition space. Architect Alexander Bodon designed a light and transparent building, allowing you to see the weather from inside. A 35-metre signal mast in front of the complex marked its presence in the city skyline.
Growing alongside your ambitions
The first AutoRAI at Europaplein attracted 331,000 visitors. Fifteen events took place in the first year alone. Before the year ended, the venue already required expansion. An additional 4,000 m² was added, made possible because the original design anticipated growth.
Over the decades, we continued to expand and modernise the site with new halls, conference facilities and sustainable innovations. Yet our purpose remains unchanged: creating space where industries meet, knowledge is shared and business moves forward.
A meeting place for generations
For 65 years, Europaplein has connected sectors and strengthened ties with the city of Amsterdam. Here, brands unveil new models, scientists exchange insights and professionals shape tomorrow’s markets. Together with you, we continue to build on that foundation.
