RAI Amsterdam and Spectral launch collaboration for smart energy management
Tuesday, 17 June 2025
RAI Amsterdam B.V. and technology partner Spectral announced a new collaboration today at PROVADA to implement an advanced energy management platform across the RAI complex. This partnership marks a significant step towards a future-proof, flexible energy system where data, technology and sustainability come together.
The BRIGHTER platform will give RAI Amsterdam real-time insights into energy flows throughout the building complex and enable intelligent, AI-driven control of technical systems — a process known as continuous commissioning. This lays the foundation for further sustainability improvements and the development of a smart grid, delivering maximum value within the constraints of current grid capacity.
“This collaboration with Spectral marks an important step in future-proofing our buildings,” says Fred Betist, Director of Real Estate at RAI Amsterdam. “By combining smart technology with sustainable energy management, we’re preparing for new legislation while advancing our strategy to make the RAI complex more digital and sustainable. In doing so, we create tangible value for our visitors, partners and the city.”
A flexible energy system for the future
One of the key challenges addressed by this project is grid congestion. RAI Amsterdam aims to create space for future expansion and new facilities, without increasing pressure on the electricity grid. By managing energy more efficiently and using existing capacity smartly, freed-up kilowatts can be redirected to support future growth.
Strategic technology partnership
As a specialist in energy management and smart energy systems, Spectral brings in-depth expertise in algorithm-based control, AI-powered building optimisation, and integrated energy flow management. Their technology enables the dynamic monitoring and control of not just building systems, but also other flexible energy assets such as EV chargers, batteries, and solar panels.
“RAI Amsterdam has a clear vision and the ambition to lead the way,” says Tom Westra, co-founder of Spectral. “We’re proud to contribute as a technology partner and to demonstrate how smart software and collaboration can drive real sustainable impact.”
Energy partner Essent supports RAI Amsterdam’s ambitions
RAI Amsterdam’s strategic energy partner Essent is also part of this collaboration. As a supplier and advisor on energy services, Essent provides guidance on the smart use of energy and how to maximise the value of sustainability measures.
“It’s great to jointly express our intent at PROVADA today to focus on smart, future-ready energy management,” says Wien van Hemert, Business Development at Essent. “Together, we support RAI Amsterdam’s sustainability ambitions and take the next step in the energy transition.”
This initiative represents a major step in RAI Amsterdam’s ambition to operate fully climate-neutral by 2050 — in line with the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge and broader European and municipal sustainability goals.
