Dutch Expertise Exported: RAI Geoclones Gain Global Momentum
How RAI Amsterdam’s international exhibition brands help address global societal challenges through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
It is a little-known fact within the international exhibitions and conferences industry: for more than 30 years, RAI Amsterdam has organised its own trade exhibitions. Even less well known is that many of these brands now have successful editions across Asia, North America and Latin America. These so-called geoclones play an important role in spreading knowledge and facilitating international collaboration, helping to address some of today’s most pressing societal challenges.
From Water Management to Horticulture
The Netherlands excels in a number of fields, including water management, horticulture and recreational marine industries. RAI Amsterdam, best known for its convention and exhibition centre in Amsterdam, has for many years organised leading trade exhibitions focused on these sectors. Five exhibition brands that originated in the Netherlands now have successful international editions: Aquatech, GreenTech, Interclean, Intertraffic and Metstrade.
Contributing to Societal Challenges
Maurits van der Sluis, COO of RAI Amsterdam: “These brands represent far more than trade exhibitions. They are international knowledge platforms that contribute to solutions for societal challenges. During our events, key issues such as drinking water supply, water quality and sustainability are discussed extensively. Innovation plays a central role.”
Van der Sluis continues: “At each location, we place additional emphasis on topics that are particularly relevant to the region. Take Mexico, for example, where we recently hosted the tenth edition of Aquatech Mexico. The countries in which we organise our geoclones value the Dutch and international expertise that these exhibitions bring closer to home.”
Economic Development and International Collaboration
The geoclones contribute directly to the economic development of their host countries by bringing together knowledge, expertise and business networks. Van der Sluis: “These connections are designed to foster long-term international collaboration. Exhibitions such as Interclean, GreenTech and Aquatech are investments in the future, both for exhibitors and visitors, and for the regions in which they take place. Many local companies and institutions do not have the opportunity to travel to Europe to attend an exhibition. A regional edition makes participation far more accessible, ensuring that valuable knowledge reaches the right people and organisations. In addition to the physical events, these multinational exhibition brands offer year-round digital platforms for knowledge exchange. Together, the live events and online communities create an international ecosystem for expertise, innovation and business connections.”
Strengthening and Expanding Markets
Exhibitors that present their products and expertise at one edition often participate in other regional editions as well. This local presence offers substantial added value.
As one exhibitor at Aquatech Mexico explains: “It is an effective way to connect with the right stakeholders, both government organisations and private-sector companies. We gain valuable insights into local challenges and discuss how our products and solutions can help address them.”
A Geoclone for Every Region
The strong foundations of these exhibition brands in Amsterdam make it possible to launch new international editions relatively quickly. Van der Sluis: “When we introduce a new edition of Intertraffic or Metstrade in another country, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. All that is required is a suitable venue and a local organisational partner. The expertise, exhibitor network, digital platform, exhibition concept and much of the content have already been developed. I would not describe it as plug-and-play, as that would oversimplify the process. However, with a relatively modest investment, a region can gain access to a vast network of expertise, information, business opportunities and international contacts within a short period of time.”
