The Huishoudbeurs on the big Screen: 80 years of Dutch history in a single event

On the eve of the 80th edition of the Huishoudbeurs, The Magic of the Huishoudbeurs will be released in Dutch cinemas on 2 February 2027. The film tells the story of an event that has been part of Dutch life for generations and shows how one of RAI Amsterdam’s most iconic proprietary exhibition brands has evolved over the years.

More than an exhibition

What began as an exhibition for Dutch housewives grew into a cultural and social phenomenon that evolved alongside changes in society. From hair dryers and the first ready-made meals to robot vacuum cleaners, kimchi and new forms of entrepreneurship, the exhibition has reflected how Dutch people live, work, care for others and consume for decades.

According to director Anne van Campenhout, the history of the exhibition also tells part of the story of the Netherlands itself. Over the years, themes such as technological innovation, changing family structures and the role of women have become increasingly prominent on the exhibition floor.

A reflection of social change

In the documentary, visitors, families and entrepreneurs who have been connected to the Huishoudbeurs for generations share their personal stories. Historians, researchers, social organisations and well-known Dutch personalities also place the event in a broader context.

The film demonstrates that the Huishoudbeurs is about more than discovering products. For decades, the event has provided insight into the developments shaping Dutch society and has brought different generations together around themes that influence everyday life.

The documentary will premiere on 1 February 2027 at Royal Theatre Tuschinski in Amsterdam and will be released in cinemas across the Netherlands from 2 February.

The 80th edition of the Huishoudbeurs will take place at RAI Amsterdam from 20 to 27 February 2027. For more information about the 80th edition of the Huishoudbeurs, click here.
