Amsterdam rises into the Top 40 of the Global Destination Sustainability Index

Amsterdam has secured a place in the Top 40 of the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index). In the year the city celebrates its 750th anniversary, Amsterdam has climbed no fewer than 20 places compared to last year, a remarkable achievement in this milestone year. The GDS-Index annually assesses cities worldwide on sustainability across four pillars: destination management, supplier engagement, social sustainability, and environmental performance. This recognition highlights Amsterdam’s active commitment to sustainable policies, responsible supplier choices, and positive social impact as a leading event destination.

Significant progress in sustainability

Amsterdam’s overall score increased by 12.8 per cent. This result is mainly due to a 52.45 per cent improvement in strategy and activities. Clear sustainability goals have been set, the ‘Sustainability as a Service’ programme has been introduced, including 100% green electricity and reusable modular stands, and collaboration with partners has intensified through initiatives such as the Better Stands programme and the award-winning Heart-Warming Amsterdam food strategy. In addition, supplier and partner engagement grew by 22.63 per cent, as many hotels, venues, and restaurants are now officially certified as sustainable. The ecological score also improved by 11.57 per cent, thanks to progress in green mobility, biodiversity, and water management.

Our contribution to Amsterdam’s ambitions

At RAI Amsterdam, we align our services with the city’s sustainability goals. Through our ‘Sustainability as a Service’ concept, we operate on 100% green electricity and use smart energy systems. Our stands are modular and reusable. We use only LED lighting and apply strict policies for recycling and sustainable procurement. Through the Better Stands programme, we promote circular stand construction using durable, reusable materials. Our Heart-Warming Amsterdam food strategy, awarded the Zuidas Public Award for Sustainability, ensures our menus are based on local, seasonal ingredients and that food waste is kept to a minimum. Finally, we are committed to social responsibility: we donate leftover materials to local initiatives, prepare meals for people in need, and support projects focused on inclusion, education, and employment.

Working together for a sustainable future

This Top 40 ranking proves that strong collaboration between the city, networks, venues, and suppliers truly makes a difference. We remain committed to enabling even more sustainable events, strengthening our ecosystem, and helping Amsterdam grow into a future-proof event destination.
