Onze Jordaan
The story of ONZE JORDAAN begins in the year 2000. In an Amsterdam care home, Greet is being prepared to celebrate her 80th birthday in the communal lounge. She speaks at length about her life in the Jordaan. At the end of the Second World War, her husband Jopie passed away, leaving her as a single mother of two. She recalls the strong sense of solidarity among local residents, strengthened by their gatherings with the choir, the Belcanto’s, founded by her beloved Jopie (Richard Spijkers).
All of this unfolds against the backdrop of the Jordaan’s poverty and decline; the municipality’s plans in the 1980s and 1990s to replace the original buildings with new housing; and the departure of the true Jordaan locals to places such as Purmerend, Lelystad and Almere. She also reflects on the arrival of young professionals and students, who may have saved the neighbourhood from demolition and further decay, but in doing so irrevocably changed its unique character.
A story filled with humour, emotion, melancholy, disappointment and bitterness – but above all with hope and reconciliation.
