Basketball club Apollo and RAI Amsterdam are joining forces. Apollo chairman Ramon Siljade and RAI CEO Paul Riemens signed a sponsorship agreement for 2.5 years on 10 April and the RAI is now shirt and livestream sponsor of the renowned Amsterdam club.
“The RAI is a genuine Amsterdam A-brand that actively seeks out connections with its local area,” says Apollo chairman Ramon Siljade. “As neighbours we are delighted with this new partnership. It offers us greater stability for the future and the chance to build on our mission of further developing basketball in Amsterdam. In the short term, the partnership with local news channel AT5 is already bringing basketball closer to residents by professionalising the livestream of our home games played in the Apollo Hall.”
In facilitating the sport of basketball Apollo Amsterdam also plays a social role in the city. Among other things, it leads a major urban project in which local children are motivated to participate. In line with this social programme and as part of the sponsorship agreement between RAI Amsterdam and the club, 250 basketballs will be distributed in the city via the ‘Every child a ball’ foundation.
Supporting the City of Amsterdam
“Like the RAI, Apollo is a well-known Amsterdam institution with a rich history and a clear vision of the future,” says RAI CEO Paul Riemens. “They have a passion for the sport and our city. We are especially impressed by how Apollo combines its athletic ambitions with a social role in supporting local youth. Successful cities are built together and the RAI is actively contributing to the diversity and quality of life in Amsterdam. This partnership will see us support Apollo in its activities in Amsterdam over the next 2.5 years. As well as cheering on the team’s performances on the court, we also see the club’s 3x3 tournaments and youth events as a great way to enhance the quality of life in our city and bring people together.”
Over Apollo Amsterdam
Basketball has a long history in Amsterdam; it is the place where the very first basketball game was held in 1926. Since then, 90 years of basketball has brought the city some 27 national titles. The Amsterdam team has often competed at the highest level of competition and, since 2014, been playing in the Dutch Basketball League (DBL) as Apollo Amsterdam. With an infinite passion for the sport and Amsterdam, Apollo aims to develop basketball further via their 5x5 team in the DBL in the Netherlands and its 3x3 team at the global level.
The Dutch national 3x3 team won silver at last summer’s World Championships, which will next be held in Amsterdam in 2019. Apollo Amsterdam’s 5x5 team is currently competing for the play-offs of the Dutch Basketball League. The club’s ambition for 2020 is to be a regular part of the DBL’s Top 4. For its 3x3 team, the goal is to compete in the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.
