RAI Amsterdam and the 'greening' of the exhibition sector

As part of its strategic ambition to be a frontrunner in the field of sustainability in the conference and event industry, RAI Amsterdam is aiming to earn European ISO 20121 certification for sustainable events in 2016. The 2015 METSTRADE show (Marine Equipment Trade Show) which took place at RAI Amsterdam from 17 to 19 November, clearly illustrated how the RAI aims to achieve this and the importance the company places on the environment.

The METSTRADE show is one of the most successful exhibitions organised by the RAI as well as the world’s largest trade event in the field of equipment, materials and systems for the international leisure marine sector. “As a team we are constantly working on making our exhibition as sustainable as possible,” says Irene Dros, Maritime Domain Manager at RAI Amsterdam. “This means focusing on smart and efficient processes, and sustainable solutions and partnerships. A great example is the phasing-out of printed tickets. We are also pleased with the close cooperation with exhibitors which made the event greener than ever.”

First RAI exhibition
The 2016 edition of the METSTRADE show hopes to be the first RAI exhibition to be held with European ISO 20121 certification for sustainable events. RAI Amsterdam already has the management system for ISO-9001 (quality) and ISO-14001 (environment), and is currently concluding the process of obtaining OHSAS-18001 (occupational health & safety) certification. The step towards acquiring ISO-20121 will contribute to the long-term strategy of RAI Amsterdam.

“As an ambitious organisation we have been working on a sustainable environment for successful meetings since 2008,” Irene Dros continues. “Under the motto ‘Creating a great environment to meet’ RAI Amsterdam aims to be one of the most visible frontrunners in the field of sustainability in the conference and event industry in Europe by 2017.”

An important factor for the growth of the METSTRADE show is the emphasis on innovation – both within the marine sector as the target group of the exhibition and the annual conference. The pioneering InnovationLAB in and around the exhibition combines all related activities and presentations of the event. Under the flag of the Material Xperience the global network Materia features sustainable materials with high potential for the leisure marine sector. Add in the activities for the Young Professionals Club and the many other networking events and it is clear why the METSTRADE show has become an unmissable platform for the marine industry.
