English version of West End musical CATS still popular
The love of CATS has once again captivated the Dutch. With over six months to go until its European premiere on 20 December in the RAI Theatre, over 20,000 tickets have already been sold. The London West End production, performed in English, will be visiting the Netherlands for the first time and be exclusively performed on the RAI stage from 20 December 2018 to 13 January 2019.
It is now 31 years since the Dutch version of CATS premiered in Amsterdam with stars such as Ruth Jacott as Grizabella. The last time the Dutch CATS was on the stage is over ten years ago in the 2006-2007 season, featuring well-known singers such as Pia Douwes and Anita Meyer.
CATS has a unique position in the world of live entertainment. As the longest running musical on both sides of the Atlantic and the longest touring show in the USA, it has proven to be a musical with a timeless appeal.
The musical is set on the most special night of the year, when the Jellicle cats have their big ball. One of them will be selected by Old Deuteronomy to be born again and start a new life. It is on this night that Grizabella, the glamourous feline who explored the wider world for years, returns home. Keen to reconnect with her family, Grizabella is saddened to discover that they are not interested. Suddenly everything changes as Old Deuteronomy is kidnapped by the devilish Macavity. The cats join forces and free their leader who then chooses Grizabella of all cats to be reborn.
The show is performed in English with Dutch surtitles to ensure visitors can follow every detail.
