Increasing event sustainability at RAI Amsterdam
RAI Amsterdam receives ISO-20121 and OHSAS-18001 during GreenTech Amsterdam
The start of GreenTech Amsterdam 2016, the international horticulture trade exhibition organised by RAI Amsterdam, just became a little greener. On the first day of the event, RAI Amsterdam received the ISO-20121 and OHSAS-18001 certificates from Lloyd’s Register Nederland, both of which underline the sustainability ambitions of RAI Amsterdam.
RAI Amsterdam has been working on increasing the environmental friendliness of its location and events since 2007, aiming to create a sustainable environment for encounters between people and markets both now and in the future. Obtaining the ISO-20121 certificate confirms that these ambitions are being realised. The international standard was developed to increase event sustainability and takes into account the impact that events can have on the environment.
“The RAI started testing its international events against the sustainability standard towards the end of 2015. Having obtained the certificate, RAI Amsterdam can now guarantee that it will actively increase the sustainability of its own events and organise them in accordance with the sustainability standard. GreenTech is just the start”; according to Ids Boersma, Director RAI Exhibitions.
Stimulating sustainable events
RAI Amsterdam is currently working with LIoyd’s Register to define which conditions exhibitions organised by external parties and held in the RAI Convention Centre should meet in order to be eligible for the ISO-20121 certificate. In doing so RAI Amsterdam intends to support and stimulate other events to increase their sustainability.
In addition to ISO-20121 certification, RAI Amsterdam was also presented with the OHSAS-18001 certificate which it obtained earlier this year. This standard focuses on safeguarding good working conditions and safety, thereby securing the safety of employees, temps, clients, visitors and other stakeholders of the RAI.
Max Meltzer, Lead Management Systems Specialist of Lloyd’s Register, presented the ISO-20121 and OHSAS-18001 certificates to Ids Boersma, director RAI Exhibitions, and Jan van den Bosch, director Production & Facilities, as RAI Amsterdam becomes the first Dutch conference location to meet these standards.
