Around the world, all major river deltas are confronted with growing population levels, increased economic activity, rising sea levels and a climate that is changing rapidly. Respons is needed to keep the densely populated river deltas inhabitable.

In February 2009, the second world forum on delta and coastal development Aquaterra will provide a unique platform where experts can discuss innovations, current practices and long term visions of developing the world's largest river deltas. You will also discover the most effective measures per delta by means of the 'Aquaterra 2009 statement' as a result of this working conference.

Why you must attend:
- Be inspired by visions and approaches
- Deltas discussed
- Enabling delta life
- Active visitor participation
- Amsterdam – the ideal location for Aquaterra
- Wide international support
Be inspired by visions and approaches
To support the Aquaterra world forum, a comprehensive Delta Research study is being carried out on actual practices and innovations in managing deltas. This will result in examples of best practices arranged by delta and used as input for delta cases in this 'working' conference, creating an outline of success factors and lessons learned.
Deltas discussed
A large number of river deltas are extremely fertile and serve as major trade centres:
  • Mississippi River Delta
  • California Bay Delta
  • Rhine River Delta
  • Yellow River Delta
  • Ganges Brahmaputra Delta
  • Ciliwung River Delta
  • Mekong River Delta
  • Nile River Delta
Join us as we discuss trends, practices and innovations for these deltas during the three-day Aquaterra 2009 conference and exhibition, from 10 to 12 February 2009 in Amsterdam RAI.
Enabling delta life
Expert speakers from different disciplines (finance, policy, knowledge, and execution) in Delta and Coastal Development around the world are invited and will mutually inspire representatives from world’s largest river deltas.

Four themes will serve as guidelines:
1. management and restoration of natural coastal systems
2. infrastructure & revitalisation
3. land use & development
4. governance

The conclusions reached from the presentations and case studies will be compounded in the Aquaterra 2009 statement.

The following topics will be discussed for each delta region:
  • Climate change proofing – adaptive strategies
  • Risk management – flood risk, risk communication
  • Spatial planning & zoning
  • Multi-functional use of infrastructure
  • Social/cultural issues – public awareness
  • Room for rivers
  • Building with nature: integrity of the ecosystem
  • Natural coastal protection, wetlands restoration
  • New forms of contracting
  • Innovative financing – Public Private Partnership
  • More...
  • Active visitor participation
Gaele Rodenhuis, Chairman of the Aquaterra International Advisory Committee, explains why a working conference can make a difference: "There are numerous conferences on coastal protection and climate change worldwide where scientists talk about their latest discoveries," says Rodenhuis, a renowned consultant in the field of delta technology. "At Aquaterra the focus will be on the application of that new knowledge. We want to take these new scientific discoveries to a higher level by looking for the most effective solutions for the various deltas with all experts present."
Amsterdam – the ideal location for Aquaterra
Aquaterra 2009 will be held in Amsterdam, the historic centre of which is built on wooden piles in an area with deep polders kept dry by pumping engines that work around the clock. This makes for a unique and inspiring conference location as we look for sustainable solutions in densely populated and low-lying deltas.
    Wide international support
Aquaterra receives extensive international support from trade and industry, social organisations, governments and institutes, including:
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI), International Water Association (IWA), Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), Partners for Water, European Water Association (EWA), Dutch association of consulting engineers (ONRI), International Association of Hydraulic Engineering & Research (IAHR) and The Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI), International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), Co-operative Programme on Water and Climate (CPWC).
